QR codes go big

October 7, 2011

QR codes have been growing in popularity for some time. Now they’re getting even bigger. Thousands of square feet bigger, that is.

We recently ran across articles titled Largest. QR Code. Ever. But Why? and Rooftop QR Codes Aim to Infiltrate Google Maps. It seems that creating huge QR codes which can only be fully seen from the air is the latest craze in QR code marketing. In the first story, a new social networking platform called Skanz painted a huge QR code as a publicity stunt. But the second article discusses a new service called Blue Marble which aims to use Google Earth and Google Maps as a marketing platform by installing huge QR codes on building rooftops.

While these sound like interesting gimmicks, we have to wonder about the effectiveness of rooftop QR code advertising. What do you think? Are these companies taking QR codes just a little too far?

Power posters!

September 16, 2011

The New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) is attracting attention with these posters. Anyone that’s seen a few movies in their lives will start to see narrative patterns repeating themselves, and these brightly colored posters satirize the clichés with hilarious truth.

One of the NYILFF ads shows a target practice chart with only one bullet nicking the shoulder of a human figure while a barrage of bullets surrounds the chart. The caption on the chart reads, “Villain’s accuracy against the hero in a movie,” perfectly expressing movie watchers’ frustration with film protagonists seemingly always facing incompetent marksmen. If you think about it, remember when Obi-wan Kenobi tells Luke that the blast points on the Jawa’s sand crawler are “too accurate for sand people” and could “only be made by storm troopers?”

Well, the storm troopers, as accurate as they were regarded to be, couldn’t come near hitting the side of a Millennium Falcon when shooting at a man, boy, princess and a couple of droids when it came time to prove their marksmanship!

Humor is a great way to reach customers and prospects. Whether it’s on a large format mural, a direct mailing or a promotional desk calendar for your business, R and R Images can give you the best printing and service and hit the target better than, dare we say… an accurate storm trooper? May the force of great printing be with you!

Say It BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST!

August 9, 2011

In Stardust Memories, Woody Allen’s Apartment has wall-sized images that change throughout the film. It was a talking point at the time and spawned wall graphics for people who discovered the artistic quality, along with affordability.

So, what’s on your office walls? Do you have the same posters that were there last year? Do visiting clients walk down your hallway without peering to the left or right to see your style and creativity? Are you just another company to them as they almost sleepwalk into your conference room?

Maybe you want visitors met by a 12-foot smiling Mona Lisa in your reception area? A great white shark with a gaping 15-foot open mouth in the lunchroom? A 24-foot lawn gnome outside your parking lot? Think of the possibilities of attracting attention and amusing people!

Charge the atmosphere of your office with big, bold splashes of interest and excitement. Large images (with only a few trillion to choose from in the universe) are easily installed and easy to rotate to keep a sense of freshness and excitement not only for your visitors but also for employees.

Large format printing is one of our specialities, so why not contact us and see if we can deliver the right impression for your big picture?

Making SuperShuttle’s tradeshow display Super!

July 26, 2010

SuperShuttle's first van, 1983

Everyone’s had a ride or three in SuperShuttle’s door-to-airport service.

Lisa Van Aller, large format manager at R and R Images, experienced a different kind of ride with SuperShuttle last week. Tasked with creating 9.5′ x 7′ display of SuperShuttle’s first van, she decided to have a little fun with it. Her charge was to replicate their first van in a manner that SuperShuttle could use the display to take photos of trade show attendees “in the van.” The original idea was to have the actual van parked at the show, but logistics wouldn’t allow for it. The next best thing? Large format magic by Lisa and her team.

Lisa adds a background in the windows

Notice on the second image how Lisa cleverly added a background, visible through the windows. The windows are actually “cut out” so other images can be positioned there with the help of Velcro, or trade show attendees can actually have their photos taken so they look like they’re driving a SuperShuttle van.

Lisa, testing the display

Lisa’s next step was to test the display to make sure it was ready for the show. In the third image, notice how she “tinted” the middle window. (By the way, that’s Lisa behind the wheel of the van!)

Steve gives it a try

Our production manager, Steve Klinger, jumped in the van for a test photo. He looks pretty happy about it. He’s always willing to lend a  hand.

Otto gives it the final test

The last photo shows our lead driver, Otto Jones,  giving it the final test before delivering the display to SuperShuttle. Otto gave it a thumbs up.

We wish SuperShuttle all the best at their tradeshow. We had fun with this project; we love figuring out news ways to create exciting visuals for our customers.

Quick SuperShuttle history:

In 1983, SuperShuttle pioneered the shared-ride airport ground transportation concept with the opening of its Los Angeles  operation. Today, SuperShuttle is the premier shared-ride airport transportation service in the US, providing door-to-door service for over 8 million passengers per year. Currently, SuperShuttle provides service to and from 33 airports and over 50 cities and has approximately 1,200 distinctive blue and yellow vans on the road.

*Please note–the van in the display above is SuperShuttle’s very first van. Next time you see the blue and yellow icon, notice how their vans have changed since then!
