QR Design Gets Jiggy!

August 18, 2011

We showed how companies are breaking ground with QR code design, taking ordinary crossword puzzle black squares and creating impressive and innovative designs. People are even creating them via carefully planted crops in Farmville and houses in MyTown. We just can’t get enough of these great ideas and hope you want more, too!

Say what you will about QR technology and the next step in digital communications, but while QR codes are here and now, why not make the best of them? Still, the more designed they are, the better printing you need for clear, quality and assured scanning. Whether direct mail or large format printing for the side of your building, we can use our skills to provide everything you need. Give us a call and well treat your QR A-OK, ASAP!

Photo product printing for the win-win

August 16, 2011

In addition to our digital printing and large format printing capabilities, we also have extensive experience with photo product printing. In fact, photography is how R and R Images started over 20 years ago.

Today, we offer a wide range of personalized photography products: photo books, calendars, greeting cards, notepads, notebooks and more. Not only can we print all of these items, we can add some sharp touches to the final products. Borders, business logos and other branding touches can be included on our photo products.

We primarily use our photo printing capabilities to fulfill orders for clients who handle the front-end responsibilities, but work we’ve done with a local non-profit has prompted us to develop a new sales model. The story starts when our non-profit client approached us to help them with a series of photography workshops they offer.

The workshops bring together amateur and professional photographers for few days of knowledge sharing. During the course of the event, the amateur attendees shoot a large volume of photos and our client wanted to offer the attendees personalized products made from their work. When our client came to us, they were delighted to find that not only could we handle the printing work, we could also add their branding to the products and offer a web portal for attendees to place their orders. Thanks to the portal, attendees’ friends and family could even place orders for products if they desired.

In addition to handling the entire print product workflow for our client, we arranged the business deal so that we split the sales revenue with the non-profit. This proved to be a win-win for both parties, as we were both able to generate revenue from the printing.

After creating the printing arrangement with our client, we realized that it was a model which could work for many vertical markets in addition to non-profits. Any organization which produces events involving photos can offer our printing services to their customers. Since we handle all of the front- and back-end work, we can guarantee a high level of quality and fast turnaround. We split the revenue with our client, so they are able to recognize an additional revenue stream in addition to offering beautiful products which carry their brand. And finally, their customers can order products at their leisure from the comfort of their own homes.

We’ve really enjoyed building this model and we’re continuing to grow it. Does this sound like an idea which would work for your business or non-profit? Give us call! We would be happy to discuss how we can set this up to meet your needs.

Lytro Makes You the Point-and-Shoot Master

August 11, 2011

Sure, you could scale mountains and descend into bottomless canyons with thousands of dollars of photo equipment like that crazy Australian guy on the Weather Channel, or you can sit at your computer with a cool drink and create depth of field masterpieces without a scratch, bug bite or breaking a sweat. What use to require hours of darkroom work or Photoshop effects that took hours and extensive training can be done with point-and-click ease through Lytro Photography.

Lytro describes the process as, “unlike regular digital or film cameras, which can only record a scene in two-dimensions, light field cameras captures all of the light rays traveling in every direction through a scene. This means that some aspects of a picture can be manipulated after the fact. To acquire this additional data, Lytro cameras include an innovative new light field sensor that captures the color, intensity and vector direction of light rays.”

Some of the features of this new camera include:

  • Shoot now, focus later - Because the camera captures the entire light field, there is no need to focus ahead of time. You can simply capture the moment, and adjust the focus later. This means you can concentrate on what’s happening in the scene, not fiddle with your camera. Lytro pictures can be focused to your liking days, weeks, even years after they’re taken.
  • Unparalleled speed – This is fast. Since the camera doesn’t focus before a photo is taken, you don’t miss important moments due to auto focus shutter lag.
  • Living pictures – When shared online, both the photographer and viewer can play with Lytro pictures, including changing the focus.
  • Low-light sensitivity – Everyone knows low light pictures are usually very entertaining, but they’re also pretty difficult to capture with a regular camera or cell phone. By using all of the available light in a scene, Lytro cameras capture great pictures in low light environments without use of a flash, from clubs to concerts to candlelit dinners.
  • Immersive 3D – Using the full light field, Lytro cameras will allow you to easily switch between 2D and 3D views or shift the perspective of the scene.

Want a demonstration of the possibilities of a Lytro Camera? See the images below or click here to see how the “focus later” function works. An amazing concept in “second chance” photography.

Why are we talking about photography advancements? Because we started as a photography studio over 20 years ago and we still are big fans of great photography. We’ve spun off the studio as Tonic Photo Studios, but we have extensive capabilities to print photography products. Photo books, greeting cards, notepads, calendars and more can be printed and personalized for any of your business needs. While Lytro isn’t available to the masses yet, we’ll be watching to see how this technology will change photography and ensure that we’re at the forefront of printing images captured by Lytro cameras.

Say It BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST!

August 9, 2011

In Stardust Memories, Woody Allen’s Apartment has wall-sized images that change throughout the film. It was a talking point at the time and spawned wall graphics for people who discovered the artistic quality, along with affordability.

So, what’s on your office walls? Do you have the same posters that were there last year? Do visiting clients walk down your hallway without peering to the left or right to see your style and creativity? Are you just another company to them as they almost sleepwalk into your conference room?

Maybe you want visitors met by a 12-foot smiling Mona Lisa in your reception area? A great white shark with a gaping 15-foot open mouth in the lunchroom? A 24-foot lawn gnome outside your parking lot? Think of the possibilities of attracting attention and amusing people!

Charge the atmosphere of your office with big, bold splashes of interest and excitement. Large images (with only a few trillion to choose from in the universe) are easily installed and easy to rotate to keep a sense of freshness and excitement not only for your visitors but also for employees.

Large format printing is one of our specialities, so why not contact us and see if we can deliver the right impression for your big picture?

Post-It Means Read It!

August 4, 2011

According to the Direct Marketing Association, using a Post-It on a mailing piece draws attention and adds a personal touch recipients appreciate. Does your company send out direct mail pieces that are only personalized with the salutation? It’s still not enough to say; “I care about YOU, which is why I’m sending this letter.”

Sure, sometimes you need to print a handwritten Post-It in blue ink, but if the Post-It has your name and company printed on the top, it makes it a bit more personal.

Personalized Post-Its are also great as contact information, placed on invoices, letters, stuck to office doors, car windows or just about anywhere. They can take the age-old business card to the next level and while you’re at it, how about Post-Its with a QR code on it? Create mystery, post them in odd places (the new street graffiti!) or wear one as a name tag when networking.

Call R and R Images and we’ll set you up with some great options that help not only your direct mail pieces but shoot you into Post-It stardom!

White ink magic for window clings

August 2, 2011

Last week, we talked about the ticket fraud problems we solved for one of our clients. In that story , white ink technology played an important role in creating the final product we needed. Today, we have another client success story in which white ink was the linchpin to success.

Window Clings and Peeling Problems

Late last year, Inventure Foods needed a partner to produce window clings which would be placed on vending machines around the country. We have used our HP Indigo digital presses for window cling printing on many jobs over the years, so we were confident we could meet their needs. Inventure Foods placed an order for 7,000 window clings and we set to work printing a small initial run, just to prove the viability of the clings.

Starting with a small trial run turned out the be a very smart move on our part. Based on the design of the cling, it made sense to print on white cling material instead of clear material, but we quickly found that the white cling didn’t adhere well to vending machine windows. Within 24 hours, the clings were showing unacceptable amounts of peeling, forcing us to find another solution for Inventure’s order of 7,000 pieces.

In order to fill the order, we turned to our large format presses. We can print clings on them as well, but Inventure’s clings required die cutting in order to achieve the small size which was needed. All of this greatly increased our costs, but we managed to turn out the 7,000 clings which were needed. In fact, Inventure was so happy with the work we did that they placed a second order for 11,000 pieces and agreed to a higher price in order to cover the increase caused by our use of large format printing.

White Ink Saves the Day

Without white ink, this would be the end of the story. Fortunately, we began working with white ink at the beginning of this year, which was about the same time that Inventure placed their second order with us. As we completed printing their 11,000 pieces on our large format presses, we realized that white ink may enable us to print on clear cling material with our Indigo presses. This would enable us to greatly lower the costs compared to using large format equipment.

After performing some tests, we found that the white ink performed very well. Instead of using white cling material, we just printed on clear cling material and used white ink to print the parts of the design which are white. The clings looked great and adhered to vending machine windows with no peeling. We were also able to overcome the need for die cutting of the final cling pieces by creating a custom jig, thereby lowering production costs even further. Inventure was very pleased with our commitment to finding a creative solution to the problem of high production costs and ultimately chose us to do a full run of 80,000 clings.

We’re very glad that we began working with white ink this year. Thanks to our continued commitment to staying on the forefront of digital printing technology, we were able to offer our customer a cost-effective solution for their printing needs. If your company needs to find a way to print more with lower costs, give us a call or sign up for our newsletter today. We’re confident we can solve your toughest problem.

Solving fraud problems with printing expertise

July 26, 2011

Over the years, we’ve worked with clients in a variety of industries and solved some unique problems. Today, we want to share the story of how we helped one repeat client beat a fraud problem in a fast and cost-effective way.

The client is a company which plans and produces events nationwide. They have a reputation for putting on fairly exclusive events and tickets to these events are very desirable. We can’t mention the client by name for various reasons, but the story of the problem they experienced and the solution we developed is applicable to a variety of ticketed events.

The Problem

Earlier this year, our client began to notice a fraud problem. Dishonest individuals were using photocopiers to duplicate tickets and gain access to events. When the magnitude of the problem became too great, the client came to us and tasked us with finding a creative print-based solution.

We worked through a few design iterations before arriving at an optimal solution. We initially considered using ultraviolet ink to prevent copies from being produced, but this solution would have required the use of UV flashlights by all ticketing staff. This would have added to the cost and logistics of the ticket-taking process, so we dismissed this idea.

The Best Solution

For our next attempt, we decided to try creating tickets with a foil look. Foil would be impossible to reproduce with standard photocopying equipment and would be in keeping with the high-end feel of our client’s events. However, we don’t have the equipment for working with foil in-house. To produce tickets on foil, we would have needed to partner with a third-party company to create a die and stamp all of the tickets. This process would have required a week’s worth of work and most likely would have driven the cost to an unacceptably high level.

Instead of using foil, we reached into our printing toolbox and used something we’ve worked with a couple times in the past: silver stock. We can work with silver stock just as we do with other papers, which gave us the ability to print tickets on our in-house equipment. To add a more sophisticated feel to the tickets, we chose to print the background of the ticket using white ink. Not many printers have the expertise to effectively use white ink, but we have built up our skills with it over the years and at this point, we’ve confident that we’re one of the best printers in the Southwest when it comes to white ink.

To complete the ticket design, we chose to print the client’s logo in red ink. The red ink was printed directly onto the silver stock, instead of layered on top of the white ink, which gave the logo a very classy, foil-like appearance without the expense and time required by foil. To ensure tickets were unique, we called upon our knowledge of variable data printing and included a serial number on each ticket.

The End Result

The end result was a ticket which had a very polished, high-end appearance, was impossible to duplicate on commonly available equipment and was instantly recognizable as authentic by event staff. Our approach kept costs well within our client’s budget and all tickets could be produced within two days, instead of the week which would have been required by foil tickets.

Does your company have a difficult printing challenge? Come talk to us and let us find a creative solution. Silver stock, white ink and variable data printing are just a few of the techniques we’ve mastered in over 20 years of printing experience. We’re confident we have the tools and the expertise needed to make your challenge a thing of the past.

Pearls of wisdom about personalized URLs

July 20, 2011

We here at R and R Images are big fans of personalized URLs (PURLs). They pair up beautifully with direct mail and variable data printing. They allow for much greater insight into the results of a campaign and enable personalized follow up, if you so desire.

How do they enable all of these wondrous things? Well, we could explain it, but The Ballantine Corporation recently posted a great blog entry which explains the basics. Head over there and read it now. Seriously. Even if you’re not sure how PURLs could benefit your marketing efforts, go read up on them.

What we really love about Ballantine’s post is that they discuss ways to use PURL redirects to make your first foray into PURL use easier and cheaper. We know that many budgets have been cut back and that marketing departments are being asked to do more with less money. Using PURL redirects are a great way to maximise those few marketing dollars while being able to test the effectiveness of PURLs in a campaign.

If you want to hear more from us on how we can make your marketing budget stretch as far as possible, sign up for our newsletter, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter. We promise we won’t waste your time.

Designed QR codes

July 13, 2011

For the past few years, barcode art has been all the rage in Japan and Europe. While it never caught on in America, QR codes are becoming more useful for businesses of all sizes. If you don’t have one on your business card, as your online avatar or on the side of your building, you just ain’t with it. When you scan a QR code with your iPhone, Android or other camera-enabled smartphone, you can link to digital content on the web or activate a number of phone functions including email, IM and SMS.

There are detractors that say QR codes are just a fad, soon to be replaced by Augmented Reality codes but until you have the funding to create the animation needed, stick with easy QRs. One of the hidden secrets in a QR code is that there’s a 30% correction factor. That means that each code can be missing a third of the code blocks and still work with a QR reader. Different colors can also be used and that creates some unique design challenges and possibilities.

With the saturation of smart phones, QRs should be on every hangtag, label and advertisement, allowing for up-to-date information to be available to consumers. Whether it’s a website or video, QRs are not only useful, they can be part of your packaging design.

So when you get on board with this technology, give R and R Images a call so we can plan QR images for all your business needs. From packaging, to direct mail to large format printing (giant QR codes for the side of your building!), we have the technology, the strategy and the creativity you need.
