Help us handle the holiday rush!

October 3, 2011

The holidays are fast approaching and we’re looking for some additional hands to help us keep up with the holiday rush! We know that fall has just barely arrived, but just like the retailers setting up Christmas tree displays, we need to think about the holiday season far ahead of time.

The photo product printing side of our business experiences a large increase in volume during the fourth quarter of the year as customers order photo products as gifts. In order to cope with that increase and still maintain the other printing work we do, we need to hire 130 people for day, swing and night shift work. The jobs we’re looking to fill are:

  • Digital press operators
  • Cutter operators
  • Bindery specialists
  • Fulfillment/shipping specialists
  • General laborers
We need to start filling these positions now! If you have the skills we’re looking for, visit our Careers page, download an application and email or fax it to us ASAP. Come join the R and R team for the holidays!

Slow summer? Not here!

August 30, 2011

Summer is usually a slower time for us, but this year things are really picking up as the hot weather rolls on. We’ve enjoyed bringing you some of our recent success stories and we’re confident that we’ll create many more in the upcoming quarter. We can’t talk about all of the projects and clients we have in the works, but stay tuned! You’ll definitely hear about some of them down the road.

While we’re on the topic of being busy, we’re also preparing for the holiday season, a time which is always the busiest for us. Thanks to the increase in photo product printing, we have to scale up our operation to meet the demand. In order to streamline our workflow and increase throughput, we just installed two additional HP Indigo printers. We estimate that this will provide a 50% increase in total capacity on our print floor, and we can’t wait to use all of it in the fourth quarter!

So thank you to all of our customers, both long-time friends and new clients. We’re proud to work with all of you and we thank you for helping us to buck the slow economy and grow through these times.

Photo product printing for the win-win

August 16, 2011

In addition to our digital printing and large format printing capabilities, we also have extensive experience with photo product printing. In fact, photography is how R and R Images started over 20 years ago.

Today, we offer a wide range of personalized photography products: photo books, calendars, greeting cards, notepads, notebooks and more. Not only can we print all of these items, we can add some sharp touches to the final products. Borders, business logos and other branding touches can be included on our photo products.

We primarily use our photo printing capabilities to fulfill orders for clients who handle the front-end responsibilities, but work we’ve done with a local non-profit has prompted us to develop a new sales model. The story starts when our non-profit client approached us to help them with a series of photography workshops they offer.

The workshops bring together amateur and professional photographers for few days of knowledge sharing. During the course of the event, the amateur attendees shoot a large volume of photos and our client wanted to offer the attendees personalized products made from their work. When our client came to us, they were delighted to find that not only could we handle the printing work, we could also add their branding to the products and offer a web portal for attendees to place their orders. Thanks to the portal, attendees’ friends and family could even place orders for products if they desired.

In addition to handling the entire print product workflow for our client, we arranged the business deal so that we split the sales revenue with the non-profit. This proved to be a win-win for both parties, as we were both able to generate revenue from the printing.

After creating the printing arrangement with our client, we realized that it was a model which could work for many vertical markets in addition to non-profits. Any organization which produces events involving photos can offer our printing services to their customers. Since we handle all of the front- and back-end work, we can guarantee a high level of quality and fast turnaround. We split the revenue with our client, so they are able to recognize an additional revenue stream in addition to offering beautiful products which carry their brand. And finally, their customers can order products at their leisure from the comfort of their own homes.

We’ve really enjoyed building this model and we’re continuing to grow it. Does this sound like an idea which would work for your business or non-profit? Give us call! We would be happy to discuss how we can set this up to meet your needs.

Lytro Makes You the Point-and-Shoot Master

August 11, 2011

Sure, you could scale mountains and descend into bottomless canyons with thousands of dollars of photo equipment like that crazy Australian guy on the Weather Channel, or you can sit at your computer with a cool drink and create depth of field masterpieces without a scratch, bug bite or breaking a sweat. What use to require hours of darkroom work or Photoshop effects that took hours and extensive training can be done with point-and-click ease through Lytro Photography.

Lytro describes the process as, “unlike regular digital or film cameras, which can only record a scene in two-dimensions, light field cameras captures all of the light rays traveling in every direction through a scene. This means that some aspects of a picture can be manipulated after the fact. To acquire this additional data, Lytro cameras include an innovative new light field sensor that captures the color, intensity and vector direction of light rays.”

Some of the features of this new camera include:

  • Shoot now, focus later - Because the camera captures the entire light field, there is no need to focus ahead of time. You can simply capture the moment, and adjust the focus later. This means you can concentrate on what’s happening in the scene, not fiddle with your camera. Lytro pictures can be focused to your liking days, weeks, even years after they’re taken.
  • Unparalleled speed – This is fast. Since the camera doesn’t focus before a photo is taken, you don’t miss important moments due to auto focus shutter lag.
  • Living pictures – When shared online, both the photographer and viewer can play with Lytro pictures, including changing the focus.
  • Low-light sensitivity – Everyone knows low light pictures are usually very entertaining, but they’re also pretty difficult to capture with a regular camera or cell phone. By using all of the available light in a scene, Lytro cameras capture great pictures in low light environments without use of a flash, from clubs to concerts to candlelit dinners.
  • Immersive 3D – Using the full light field, Lytro cameras will allow you to easily switch between 2D and 3D views or shift the perspective of the scene.

Want a demonstration of the possibilities of a Lytro Camera? See the images below or click here to see how the “focus later” function works. An amazing concept in “second chance” photography.

Why are we talking about photography advancements? Because we started as a photography studio over 20 years ago and we still are big fans of great photography. We’ve spun off the studio as Tonic Photo Studios, but we have extensive capabilities to print photography products. Photo books, greeting cards, notepads, calendars and more can be printed and personalized for any of your business needs. While Lytro isn’t available to the masses yet, we’ll be watching to see how this technology will change photography and ensure that we’re at the forefront of printing images captured by Lytro cameras.
